In 1790, about 90% of Vermonters lived on and earned at least part of their livelihood from farming. In 2009, about 1% of the state's population lived on Vermont's 1,050 dairy farms. As historians have noted, America was born in the country and has moved to the city. By our breakfast, dairy farmers have put in half a day's work. By noon, many have logged an eight-hour day. By nightfall, they have often added another eight-hour day. Given the long hours, the toll on the body, and the scant economic returns, why would anyone want to be a family farmer today?
